The European Commission has presented a new European Technology Sovereignty Package aimed at strengthening the continent’s capabilities in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and semiconductor production.
The initiative includes the proposed Cloud and AI Development Act and Chips Act 2.0, which seek to reduce Europe’s dependence on non-European technology providers while supporting innovation, resilience and competitiveness across the EU. Among the key objectives is increasing Europe’s semiconductor production capacity and strengthening the digital infrastructure needed to support the growing adoption of AI technologies.
The package also introduces measures designed to encourage investment in European cloud services, AI ecosystems and advanced digital infrastructure. According to the European Commission, these efforts are intended to enhance Europe’s technological resilience and ensure greater control over critical digital systems.
For businesses, SMEs, public administrations and innovation ecosystems, the initiative signals new opportunities for collaboration, digital transformation and technology development. European Digital Innovation Hubs are expected to play an important role in supporting organizations as they adopt new digital technologies and navigate the evolving digital landscape.
The proposed legislation will now enter discussions between the European Parliament and EU Member States before final adoption.
